NHS fined for default in Health and Safety

The HSE have brought forward a court case after a Healthcare worker has been struck down with Hepatitis C, on being injured by a needle. Worcestershire Hospital has been called upon to pay £12,5000 in fines plus that of £9,500 in costs.  The NHS Trust was found to have breached Health and Safety Regulations, dated back to 2007.

The un-named Healthcare worker was treating a patient who was known to have been infected by the virus, when the incident happened. It could have been prevented had she not left the needle on the worktop where she had a struggle in exposing of it due to obstruction of some kind.

The Healthcare worker had been in training at the Hospital for some weeks and was unsupervised when dealing with the Hepatitis C patient.

All improvements have been made on behalf of the trust to ensure there are no more risks for any of its employee’s or patients after the HSE investigation was carried out.
