Asbestos Found Under M53 Motorway

Deadly asbestos dust was found at a major motorway construction site forcing scores of workmen to down tools. Costain sent up to 100 workers home on 11th March 2010 following the emergency closure of the site.

Up to 90 tonnes of contaminated rubble has been brought to site to use as hard standing, it was only during the moving of the material around the site that asbestos was suspected. This has now been confirmed.

It is understood the contaminated rubble came from the former Renshaw Bakery owned by Britannia Hotels and is to the rear of the Adelphi hotel in Liverpool. The building had recently been demolished and levelled.

The demolition company involved insists its site was given the all clear by an independent UKAS accredited laboratory appointed by the client and all work was carried out according to current legislation.

The Highways Agency is undertaking further tests to make sure no further asbestos is present.

AOH Ltd has had a long relationship with Britannia Hotels in advising them over Asbestos and other Health & Safety matters. In this instance AOH Ltd have had no involvement and the UKAS accredited laboratory involved was not AOH Ltd.
